Unfinished Business

Our watching of all of the science fiction shows that we’d ever missed is continuing with Battlestar Galactica. We’re now on Season Three, and the other night we watched the “Unfinished Business” episode.

The writing really impressed me. I would imagine on a show like this that it takes guts to have an entire episode with virtually no action or plot, just pure characterisation and personal dynamics. It was gorgeous. For those who haven’t seen it, it concerns informal boxing matches that have been set up on ship as a way of blowing off steam. Through flashbacks, it covers a lot of the backstory that makes the present relationships so powerful and so twisted. Lee Adama and Starbuck’s unrealised romance, Admiral Adama maintaining his leadership and control, and all the people who are casualties along the way, like poor loyal Dualla.

Very powerful TV.

  1. Enjoy this season.

The stupid really starts to hit the fan in season four, and season five only makes any sense if you’re on shrooms.

  2. Ah, boo. I’m really enjoying this, and it’s the last series on the list. I’ve gone through all Stargate/Atlantis seasons, Babylon 5, and so on.

  3. There are people who claim to enjoy season four and five, and who am I to say they’re wrong.

But Starting about 1/3 through season four I began hating the show, and season five was absolutely terrible to me.

But, maybe it won’t hit your hate buttons the way it did mine.
