Miscellaneous

*yawn* Stayed up waaaay too late last night. Fencing was good; the crowds had thinned out, so Steve was able to start giving lessons. I was having a hard time, as I have years and years of sabre moves ingrained in muscle memory. Foil is very different. Here is Phil taking a lesson (*sniff* he never takes pics of me…)

You may have already seen this: A new site called Misbehaving.net has launched. It’s a group blog with lots of smart techy women participating to discuss women’s contributions to computing, and also to highlight opportunities and challenges within the field. Nice. :)

After today, I am on vacation until next Tuesday. woo hoo! *bounce* I have been so bored…all the work that I normally space out during the week was all done in a panic before inspection, so there is nothing to do right now. I’ve lost my will to do anything, anyway. No one cares here. The computing staff are the only ones presently with access to upload content, and I’ve yelled so many times about coding correctly that they’ve taken to converting everything to PDFs and Word documents. WTF? It’s easier to convert a page to a PDF than it is to learn simple html coding and do it properly? I don’t understand people. Sometimes they seem to just be willfully ignorant. I’ve lost my will to work, and my work life is devoid of challenge and reward. I want something new. :(

Unfortunately, yes. Way easier. And people will always take the path of least resistance.

I spent many years trying to elicit content for websites. You have my sympathy.

    ‘Export to pdf’

    It’s that simple.

I happen to like pdf’s tho actually – they obviously aren’t suitable for what you’re doing, but they do provide a useful way to exchange formatted information without losing the formatting – and great when you run a printing company!

  3. I know – content management for a large group of people in any company is never easy. But these people TEACH web design. That’s the part that really burns me up.

  4. They don’t NEED formatting – unless you’re talking about retaining the 1600×2400 images that they’ve resized in the html editor to a small size, thinking that will cut the file size. Grrr…..I see dumb people.

  5. Vacation is always fun, fun, fun.

I bet within the next two or three lessons your muscles will let go of the saber memory and start forming foil memory.

  6. Then the answer is simple. Me, you and Tim Berners Lee go round their houses with baseball bats.

Harsh, I know, but the others will learn from the lesson.

Careful, talk like that will get you into trouble. I used to have a nicely paid job in IT, a good social life in london and lots of friends. Now I’m a sad lonely impoverished student in dreary Derby. ;) Truth is, it was the best decision I’ve made in my life in years. If you don’t like what you’re doing, I’d say change it and if you don’t like that, then change again. Making the first move is hard though.

  8. That’s true – it is just making the first move. (Which I have been putting off for some time now.) But I’ve already made the choice to go from the challenging, highly-paid job to this, so I have no where to go but up, right? ;)

  9. lol…I sure hope so! I felt like an idiot. Not a new sensation, I have to admit. But I’m having fun.

If you’ve seen the artwork and design that uath’s capable of you’d realise she’s so wasted in her position…
