Miscellaneous Ramblings

I’m avoiding making the trek out to the stable. I thought I’d never get warm last night, and I was sick and shivery most of the night. Maybe later. ;)

A post on ‘s blog about Santa and other mythical figures made me think about a very fun, nasty book for the season, Santa Steps Out. I’ve probably written about this before, and I know I’ve either bought the book for some of you, or told you about it. It’s a very erotic, black-comedy fantasy about Santa and the Tooth Fairy, among other supposedly-fictional characters. These children’s myths were once more formidable characters, who transmuted into new characters as belief in them faded. Santa was once Pan, and I think the Tooth Fairy was once a dryad, and Santa’s lover. They are not allowed to meet in the flesh, but one Christmas Eve Santa is delivering presents at the same time the Tooth Fairy is collecting a tooth, and all hell breaks loose. Not “all hell,” actually, but Santa does lose control and ejaculates all over the tree, leaving small pearly-white candy canes on the branches. In the morning, the small children run downstairs, and start eating the candy, which has a wonderful salty/sweet flavour. They bring some of it up to their mother to try.

Yes. It’s quite nasty and funny.

Anyway, the Tooth Fairy was particularly creepy and primal, crunching up the teeth from under the pillows. Very scary character. This resonated with me, as I commented in ‘s blog, because the Tooth Fairy always disturbed me a bit (although I appreciated the coins). Why was she interested in children’s teeth? Why would my parents be ok about some strange weirdo coming into my bedroom when they weren’t there and I was alone at night? It really bothered me.

Fiddler on the Roof was actually quite good. I’d forgotten how sad it was, as it had been so long since I’d seen it. Our family is the usual American ancestral mix: Irish, English, German, Russian, Scottish. My great(great?)-grandparents on my mother’s side came from Odessa, family name of Matcovich. Given the timeframe, I would assume that they would probably have been Russian Jews driven out of their homes by pogroms. And so, very similar to the story of the musical. Possibly, anyway. I’ve always thought that it would be interesting to be able to research the family history, given the time and the money to do so. I know a bit about the Irish side: immigration to New York, menial work (scrubbing stoops, among other things) to survive, and then participants in the Oklahoma Land Rush, eventually becoming cattle ranchers.

The stable is still calling…I can hear it through the freezing rain. Damn it, shut up. :( *sigh* I’d better go…

  1. The tooth fairy grinds up the teeth to make fairy dust. Some countries have tooth mice or rats! so I suppose our idea of a pretty fairy skipping around the bedroom is less of a worry to our parents than the thought of a mouse or a rat:)

  2. Fairy dust comes from teeth? Eeeeeuuuw. Ok, that would have freaked me out as well, as a child. I don’t know that it doesn’t now, actually. lol… Just to think, the sparkly magic fairy dust is ground-up bicuspids and molars. *s* That’s great!

  3. On the subject of Tooth Fairy lore, I just remembered this: The Tooth Fairy by Graham Joyce. Very interesting book. There was also a short story that I remember reading, possibly in Omni, but I’m not sure. It involved the Tooth Fairy, a very evil, wild creature, going out and getting teeth, rather than waiting for them to fall out naturally. lol…a fairytale version of the cartoon of the two vultures, where one looks at the other and says “Fuck this – I’m going to go KILL something.”

Hey, I’m in a weird mood today.
