Miscellaneous Friday

Here are a few miscellaneous thoughts floating around my head this morning (don’t expect anything profound from me after a week of complete and soul-destroying boredom):

Margaret Cho rocks. She kicks ass. This post made my morning. Although her journal suffers a bit for being too verbose, she’s smart and she’s funny and I would love to hang out with her. Eating chocolate croissants and saying “fuck” a lot. ;)

Men with big noses. I have a thing for guys with big noses. Phil is a bit self-conscious about having a large-ish nose – I like it. More so on men than women, granted – but on a man it’s very sexy. Neil Gaiman is gorgeous, as is Jeff Goldblum (his younger days, in The Fly and Mr. Frost era). I like tall, skinny/wirey guys that look like intelligent Jewish guys from New York. So sue me for the stereotype…I can’t help it.

Jeffrey Zeldman’s site. Ok, he’s undoubtedly the man, one of the gurus of web standards. I have his book, Designing with Web Standards, on my desk as we speak. But why does his site make my eyes hurt with the pale type against a white background? Why is it not liquid? That just pisses me off. I don’t care if he has an option for viewers to make the type slightly larger and bolder…the default version of the site is very difficult to read. He’s not the only one, either. It’s trendy to have pale grey type on white backgrounds, and that’s fine if that suits your artistic sensibilities. Just don’t fucking talk about accessibility and standards on a page that is hard to read, ok?

Eolas Patent. Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the Web, wrote a letter Tuesday to the U.S. Patent and Trademarks Director regarding the Eolas patent, asking that the patent be invalidated. Read it here – he makes some very good points.

Ok, I’m done. We’re going on a pubcrawl tonight, and then tomorrow Phil and I are going to drive to France to look at a horse. Not really, of course, but we have to drive as far as you can drive without driving into the sea. He will probably look like a camel and then Phil will kill me.
